A note from the instructor: Photographer Jay Maisel is most often given credit for the expression, “The best camera is the one you have with you.” Today, it has become very simple to always have a high-quality camera with you, because it’s built into your iPhone. While there are some serious limitations to the iPhone camera - namely: no functional aperture, a tiny sensor, and limited camera controls – recent models are incredibly capable, complete little photography studios. They can make RAW files, or use Apple’s remarkable HEIC format. Both of these formats allow for non-destructive editing in the native Photos app. So, you can manipulate an image extensively, with great flexibility and always return to the original photo. You can also make large prints at high resolution (up to 20x25 inches). While I use an array of cameras in my photography practice, I often use my iPhone when I can’t or simply don’t have a camera available. I am continually surprised by just how great a photograph it can make. More importantly, I always have it with me.
